What Is VLC?

VLC is a free and open source application used by millions of people and developed by the non-profit organization VideoLAN.

It is a multimedia player that supports a wide range of popular audio and video file formats, including .mp3, .avi, .mpeg, .mov, .wma and many others! It also supports DVD, CD, and streaming playback.

VLC works with Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and many others.

VLC comes pre-packaged with a huge library of codecs, so you’ll never have to worry about searching for plug-ins in order to play your files. It is 100% free of viruses, and spyware, and doesn’t collect any information about its users.

History

VLC started as a student project at the French École Centrale Paris in 1996. In 2001, the project became open source. It was opened up to developers and is now a worldwide project being worked on by people all over the world.
